La Candelaria is the 17th locality of Bogota, this is the historical center and have the main seat of goverment institutions, meets the architectural heritage with builds of colonial and republic period.


The locality of la Candelaria is a enclave of Santa fe locality, the limits of la Candelaria are the following:

In the north: the enviromental axis, this is the old course of the San Francisco river, also this is the famouse Jimenez avenue.

In the south: the unión of circunvalar avenue with comuneros avenue

In the west: tenth avenue connects wint jimenes avenue for the north and for the south with comuneros avenue.

In the east: the circunvalar avenue, also known as los cerros avenue.

The Candelaria locality is the smaller of Bogota, it is known as the historical center of the city , initially gave the name of Candelaria as a reference in the surroundings of the Church and the convent of the Augustinian Fathers and this denomination was extended to the area of the East of the plaza Bolivar
In 1960, was a social and political movement which aimed to declare La Candelaria cultural center of the nation,I just took the law 59 of 1963 emerged.
The Candelaria was declared a national monument by Decree 264 of February 12, 1963
The  agreement 10 the 1980 created the Corporación La Candelaria, legal and administrative body which was aimed at the conservation of La Candelaria as a historical and cultural center

In Central historic city you can find different museums important to the history of Bogotá as it is the Museum of  the independencia, the  casa de la moneda, el of Botero among others,

                                   SHORT HISTORY OF THE CAFES IN BOGOTÁ

According to the historian Gina Zanella Adarme in Bogota at the end of the nineteenth century had five cafes: Coffee Madrid Milan, Café Florian, Café Italy, The Botella de Oro the altozano of the Cathedral and the portals. These cafés were home of spaces for socializing in Bogota during the first three decades of the twentieth century, were the adaptation of a new practice urban linked to religious character and patriotic. Between 1894 and 1930, cafes in Bogota were concentrated in the neighborhood Cathedral, where the bourgeois city joined with the old colonial appearance and area financial, commercial and Government buildings.

The Gran Via was one of the most ancient establishments, founded in 1892 by the musician and conductor Manuel Trujillo located on the career 7 with street 17, opposite to the missing convent of Santo Domingo in the Quarter the Snow.     

The Café Windsor was one of the most crowded from its appearance in1916. There were meeting the members of the Symbolic Cave.

The Café Tequendama placed in the career 7 the second real street in 1930, took entertainment spaces as billiards, poker and courts of turmequé.


The Cafe Metropol, acquired in 1930 preferred by the German and Spanish colonies owners had imported a special machine to serve the drink pressure siphon and its accompaniment they offered hams, sausages and smoked pork chops

The presence of cafes restaurants became more frequent close to theatres and cinemas. The Cosmopolitan Club located on the 8 race between calle 13 and 14. The house specialty was French food and one of the first establishments to extend their opening hours by nocturnal activities
